Daisies Watercolor

When I first "gave myself permission" to be an artist, I studied watercolor with Marie Shaunessey (sic) in Anchorage, Alaska. She was a lovely artist, first generation Japanese, from Detroit Mi. (her family went back to Japan for 18 years due to  WWII and then relocated back to Michigan)

During our class we would chat about Hudson's and other Detroit landmarks. Of course we discussed art making and who her influences were.  She was a student of Edgar A. Whitney.

I took two watercolor workshops with Mr. Whitney. He was in his nineties at the time.  This is one of the paintings I did after my studies with Marie and Ed.

Life with Color

I just finished re-watching "The Best Marigold Hotel..."  It is storytelling at its best. The themes, colors, and characters are uplifting.  Especially the colors.

My own artwork is full of saturated color.  I have always thought is was from living in Alaska...two seasons: winter and about 12 weeks of summer. Now that I am living back in Michigan there are more opportunities with a longer growing season to be inspired by color. This picture was taken outside Limner Press....and the flowers were there well into fall.

In "...Marigold Hotel..." the fall season of life is a main theme. It is about new beginnings and coping with cycles of life.  My "cycle" has been overwhelmed by the loss of our Mother, "or is it our own loss we are mourning".  So I am cultivating memories that are full of color and uplifting experiences.

The Hat That Became Finished

I have been a knitter for many years.  However...due to my tendency not to like following patterns, I found it difficult to finish any project.  This hat is completed but not according to the directions!!! I gave it to Sean Barrett, my classical guitar teacher, because.....well, it fit him the best.  (I think it fits because he has extra hair!)  He graciously posed for me.   Thanks, teach!!!

Mom's Jewelry

My mother's jewelry is a link to her school teaching career. First grade teachers, back in the 60's, seemed to get sparkle pins for Christmas (yes, that is what they called it back then).  Although I have no evidence of who really gave her what, I like to think of the sparkles as part of her personality that I can wear since her death.

Living Small

I love living in a small space.  I look for ways to have house hold items do double duty.  For instance, the double recliner can be dog bed.
